There are a lot of reasons for absence, such as illness, long-term illness, vacation, compensatory leave, furlough with full pay, furlough with reduced pay, parental leave, child care and unauthorized absence. Linked to this, there are also subcategories, such as leave for studies which is fundamentally regulated by the Act on Workers' Right to Leave for Education.

These reasons for absence are linked to a multitude of different laws and regulations that talk about what the company and the employee are entitled to in compensation and not.
